Abstract
Using historical case studies dealing with research on
fundamental questions related to development and heredity
from the 19th to the 21st century, the paper (i) examines
researchers' underlying epistemologies with a focus on
induction, critical theory testing, and commitment to
scientific belief; (ii) analyzes how postmodernism and big
data, for example the availability of whole-genome
sequencing data and powerful computational technologies
are beginning to change the conventional epistemologies in
current biology.
